Sexting App Privacy: Your Number, Your Chats and the Scams to Avoid

Before you pick an app, know what it reveals about you, who can read your chats, and the scams that live inside sexting apps. This page sticks to what the apps themselves say.

The short version

Who can see your phone number

Signal

You still need a phone number to sign up. Since February 2024 you can create a username and chat without sharing your number, and by default your number is hidden from people who haven't saved it. "Who can find me by my number" still defaults to everyone, so set it to Nobody in Settings > Privacy > Phone number (Signal, February 2024).

Telegram

Every account is tied to a phone number. Telegram says your number is only visible to people you've saved as contacts, and you can change that in Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number. A public username lets people message you without your number (Telegram FAQ).

Kik

Signs up with an email and a username, so no phone number is shown. Its terms say users must be 18+, but it only checks ages in the UK, so you can't be sure who you're talking to. Chat history clears when you log out.

Dating and creator sites

These usually sign up with an email. Paying means giving your card details to the site, so check what name appears on your statement before you buy.

Who can read your chats

Disappearing messages and screenshot alerts

Timers delete messages from both phones, but they can't stop a screenshot or a photo of the screen. Telegram says it will "try to send a notification if a screenshot is taken" in Secret Chats, and that this can't be guaranteed on every device (Telegram FAQ). Treat every image you send as one that could be saved.

Snapchat specifically

Snapchat is the app most people start with, but Snap's rules ban "sharing pornography, sexual nudity, offers of sexual services" (Snap Community Guidelines, updated September 2026). Accounts that break them can be locked. Watch for people selling access to a "premium Snapchat": you pay a stranger and get nothing you can check.

Scams inside sexting apps

If someone threatens you

Financial sextortion is rising fast: NCMEC, which tracks cases involving children and teens, received more than 50,000 reports in 2025, up from more than 36,000 in 2024 (NCMEC, June 2026).

Questions

What's the most private free app for sexting?

Signal, with a username instead of your number and disappearing messages on. It's free and encrypted by default. It won't find you anyone to talk to, though.

Does Telegram encrypt my chats?

Only Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted. Normal chats are stored on Telegram's servers.

Can someone screenshot a disappearing message?

Yes. Alerts can be bypassed, and nothing stops a photo of the screen.
